Position Summary: Westmead Anaesthesia Training Scheme is
a large rotational program emcompasing comprehensive anaesthetic training
for all twelve modules of the new program of ANZCA commencing in January
2006. This program encompasses all specialisty requirements and involves
rotations to a number of hospitals in Sydney West and in rural New South
Wales. There are comprehinsive courses for the Primary and Second Part FANZCA
and a strong educational ethic within the department. Registrars are encouraged
to participate in our research program which often acts a basis for formal
projects.Applicants are sought for positions in several years of our training
scheme. Specifically, appointments will be made to each of the training years
of the best applicants. The intent of this appointment process is to have
approximately equal numbers in each of the training years and to allow mentorship
of candidates throughout their training.Specific goals will be required for
continued reappointment (on an annual basis) withinthe training program.
Satisfactory inservice assessments of candidates will need to be achieved.
Candidates progressing beyond the second year of training will be required
to have achieved the Primary Fellowship examination in both physiology and
pharmacology. Candidates progressing into Year 5 of the training program
will be required to have completed modules 1-10 and to have completed the
Second Part FANZCA examination.Applicants would normally be expected to have
completed 3 post graduate years of medical training and have demonstrable
interest in Anaesthesia as a chosen career. Interested applicatns should

Challenges: Major challenges for the basic trainee:
• Balancing training and education requirements with service provision,
within the limitations of a busy public health service.
• Maintaining a professional role and responsibility for patient care, in
close liaison with supervising consultants.
• Working collaboratively with other staff in a multi-disciplinary team.
• Maximising the efficient utilisation of the physical resources of the
Health Service.
• Being flexible with the work required in a range of Health Services and
locations.
• Responsibility for supervision and teaching of junior medical officers
attached to the medical team.
Communication: The doctor is a key person who works closely with all members
of staff and must:
• Work as part of, and contribute to a multi-disciplinary team.
• Deal with matters of an urgent or sensitive nature.
• Demonstrated ability to exercise discretion, sensitivity and maintain
confidentiality.
• Demonstrates leadership within a team environment and actively contributes
to team activities including meetings and decision making processes.
• Demonstrated ability to initiate and undertake discussions with patients
and their families regarding their hospitalisation, treatment and progress.
• Communicate effectively and in a timely fashion with consultants regarding
the patients under their care.
Decision Making: • Close and effective liaison with consultants will allow
you to demonstrate your level of ability and understanding of patient care
and enable you to expand your areas of responsibility.
• All patients managed within the hospitals of the health service are under
the direct care of a specialist medical practitioner. All decisions regarding
their care are to be clearly communicated with the specialist responsible for
that care.
Selection Criteria: 1. Currently registered or eligible for registration in
New South Wales
2. MBBS or equivalent and completion of at least two postgraduate years.
3. Demonstrated commitment to relevant training program.
4. Demonstrates ability to work in a complex clinical environment.
5. Demonstrated excellent clinical skills and judgment.
6. Demonstrates teamwork, time management and problem solving skills in the
clinical setting.
7. Experience and willingness to teach junior medical staff.
8. Ability to move between services and geographical locations to deliver patient
care.
9. Ability to work in a computerised environment or a preparedness to learn.
10. Demonstrated verbal and written communication skills.
11. Demonstrated commitment to quality improvement, patient safety and risk
management.
12. Preparedness and ability to work independently in a supervised environment.
13. Prepared to participate in overtime and on-call work as required.
14. Preparedness to undertake secondments to other hospitals included in the
Network if required, including non-metropolitan hospitals.
15. Knowledge of relevant NSW Health policy, including EEO and OH&S.
