After Hours Commitments at Westmead

After hours commitments as a fellow at Westmead for 2003 are estimated to be:

  • One evening every week
  • One weekend every four weeks
  • One block of nights every six months.

Weekdays

Weekday evenings run until 2200.  The night registrar starts at 2130 hours, allowing a half hour handover.  As a senior registrar you will generally be allocated a regular evening (Monday-Thursday) when the on call is allocated.

Weekends

Weekends are from 0730 to 2200.  Generally the days are busy (but not rushed), with semi urgent cases from the night before plus new emergencies as they arise.  There is staffing for two theatres from 0830 -2030.  This allows the outside registrar and/or the on call general, cardiac or obstetric consultant to deal with extra workload as required.

Nights

Nights run from 2130 to 0730 on weekends and 2130 to 0830 on weekdays. As the senior you will be responsible for general theatre cases after hours. You are required to supervise the junior outside registrar (at their request) in their role of covering obstetric anaesthesia and analgesia, pain, arrest and trauma calls. This typically occurs when they feel they lack the skills to handle a case or when they are unable to meet simultaneous demands (eg., a trauma call whilst they are doing a caesarean section).
