After Hours Roster.
During your terms at Westmead Hospital you will participate in the after
hours and night roster. This section details the after hours requirements for
trainees.
As a junior trainee you will be generally allocated to the obstetric/pain
evening cover in your first two years of training. Generally, for most
trainees at some stage in your third or fourth year you will be allocated to the
inside (OR) cover.
Notes on after hours commitments
- The department generally takes a flexible attitude to after hours
commitments - we try to accommodate all reasonable requests within the
service requirements of the hospital.
- It is generally easy to swap shifts internally with other trainees.
Most of our trainees are flexible in swapping shifts and we encourage
prospective trainees to have a similar attitude.
- There are generally no admimistrative problems with shift swaps, even at
late notice provided that adequate cover is maintained - as long as the
resident support unit are informed in advance they are happy.
- Cover at appropriate levels must be maintained. In practice this
means that generally you will swap with others at a similar level as
yourself. You can't have two first year trainees end up on together as its
inadequate cover for either of the trainee if they encounter problems.
Intensive care rosters
- NICU and ICU terms have their own internal arrangements for shift work
which you will be allocated to. During these two terms you will not be
required under normal circumstances to provide after hours cover for the
department.
