Cardiac Anaesthesia.
During this term you will receive training in the following areas:
- Management of anaesthesia for patients with significant cardiac illness.
- Anaesthesia for cardiac surgery
- Technical skills in:
- Arterial line placement
- Central line placement
- Swan-Ganz catheters.
- Principles of intra-operative TOE for:
- Cardiac surgery.
- Non-cardiac surgery.
- Trauma.
- Principles of intra-aortic balloon pumps.
- Principles of cardio-pulmonary bypass.
Westmead hospital is one of the leading institutions in the use of
intraoperative TOE - both in cardiac and noncardiac surgery.
Thoracic Anaesthesia
During your rotation in cardiothoracic anaesthesia you will be trained in:
- Anaesthesia for patients with pulmonary disease.
- Principles of one lung ventilation.
- Use of a fibreoptic bronchoscope.
- Use of thoracic epidural catheters for post operative analgesia.
