Cardiac Anaesthesia.

During this term you will receive training in the following areas:

• Management of anaesthesia for patients with significant cardiac illness.
• Anaesthesia for cardiac surgery
• Technical skills in:
  • Arterial line placement
  • Central line placement
  • Swan-Ganz catheters.
• Principles of intra-operative TOE for:
  • Cardiac surgery.
  • Non-cardiac surgery.
  • Trauma.
• Principles of intra-aortic balloon pumps.
• Principles of cardio-pulmonary bypass.

Westmead hospital is one of the leading institutions in the use of intraoperative TOE - both in cardiac and noncardiac surgery.

Thoracic Anaesthesia

During your rotation in cardiothoracic anaesthesia you will be trained in:

• Anaesthesia for patients with pulmonary disease.
• Principles of one lung ventilation.
• Use of a fibreoptic bronchoscope.
• Use of thoracic epidural catheters for post operative analgesia.
