Obstetric Analgesia and Anaesthesia

During this term you will be trained in several techniques including:

  • Use of epidural analgesia for labour
  • Anaesthesia for obstetric surgery:
    • Spinal anaesthesia.
    • Epidural anaesthesia.
    • General anaesthesia.
  • Use of epidurals for post operative pain.
  • Management of obstetric illness in anaesthesia.

Acute Pain Service (APS)

You will also be attached to the acute pain service at Westmead hospital.  During this attachment you will learn:

  • Techniques for management of post operative pain.
    • Major systemic techniques for pain:
      • Patient Controlled Analgesia
      • Opiate Infusions
  • Minor techniques for pain.
  • Use of  regional techniques for pain:
    • Epidural analgesia.
    • Regional catheter techniques.
  • APS techniques for non surgical pain
  • APS techniques for cancer pain.
