2. Induction

2.1 Patients may be induced in the Anaesthetic Room or the Operating Room at the discretion of the Anaesthetist.

2.2 When induction occurs in the Anaesthetic Room, circulation, respiration and oxygenation must be monitored. A pulse oximeter and ECG must be exclusively available for every anaesthetised patient. A CO2 monitor must be exclusively available for every intubated and ventilated patient.

2.3 No induction of anaesthesia shall take place in the absence of a member of the nursing staff. The Anaesthetic Nurse must remain with the Anaesthetist from the beginning of induction until given leave by the Anaesthetist to go. There can be no exception to this rule.

2.4 The Anaesthetic Nurse should provide assistance :-

2.4.1 During venipuncture and in securing the intravenous device

2.4.2 During pre-oxygenation, if used.

2.4.3 During intubation, by handing over the instruments required, inflating the cuff and helping to secure the tube.

2.4.4 By performing cricoid pressure or manipulating the larynx to facilitate intubation.

2.4.5 Calling for an orderly to assist with transferring the patient into the Operating Room.

2.5 In the case of general anaesthesia, transfer to the Operating Room may be done at whatever stage the Anaesthetist may determine.
