5. DISCHARGE OF DAY ONLY PATIENTS

Discharge Criteria

The operative site should be without evidence of abnormal swelling, bleeding or compromised condition.

Vital signs should be stable.

The patient should be able to stand and walk without distress.

Pain should be controllable with oral medication.

Nausea and vomiting should be controlled.

There is no minimum period of postoperative stay.

Patients must be given appropriate discharge instructions including:

Dietary instruction

Clear instructions regarding pain management

Precaution about performing activity requiring concentration e.g. driving

Surgeon's instructions

Phone number to report postoperative anaesthetic concerns or complications
