5. FASTING GUIDELINES

All patients for elective surgery are fasted a minimum 6 hours for solids and 2 hours for clear fluids. To allow flexibility of lists the following guidelines are practically applied.

5.1 Patients on all day lists

No food from 2400 hours the day before.

May have clear fluid/water up until 0600 on the day of surgery. Take usual morning medications at this time. Patients who are scheduled later in the day may be permitted further oral fluids at the discretion of the anaesthetist after arrival in peri-operative ward.

5.2 Patients on morning lists

No food from 2400 hours the day before.

May have clear fluid/water up until 0600 on the day of surgery. Take the usual morning medications at this time.

5.3 Patients on afternoon lists

May have breakfast to finish by 0700 hours.

Clear fluids up until 1000 hours

Take the usual medications at scheduled times with a sip of water.

5.4 Medications

Patients should take all usual medications except NSAIDS, oral hypoglycaemic agents and warfarin unless specifically directed by the Anaesthetist.
