7. SURGICAL PROCEDURES WITH THE POTENTIAL FOR MAJOR BLOOD LOSS REQUIRING PREOPERATIVE FBC AND BLOOD GROUP AND ANTIBODY SCREEN.

This list is a guide only if the operation is not here or you are in doubt please consult surgeon or anaesthetist involved.

7.1 General Surgery

Mastectomy/axillary clearance

Any laparotomy or laparoscopy involving bowel resection, liver resection or biopsy, gastrectomy, splenectomy, adrenalectomy etc.

Oesophagectomy

7.2 Orthopaedics

Total hip replacement, total knee replacement (autologous blood should be arranged, if possible).

Shoulder surgery

Any open reduction, internal fixation of major fracture

Laminectomy

Scoliosis surgery

7.3 Obstetrics and Gynaecology

Abdominal or vaginal hysterectomy

Radical hysterectomy or oophorectomy

Caesarean section (2 units x matched blood in the operating theatre if placenta accreta suspected)

7.4 Vascular

Carotid endarterectomy

Fem-pop bypass or other bypass procedures e.g. Axillo-bifemoral bypass.

Aortic surgery (2 units cross matched blood in operating theatre)

7.5 Urology

TURP and VLAP

Radical prostatectomy, nephrectomy or cystectomy

Bladder augmentation

Percutaneous nephrolithotomy or pyelolithotomy

7.6 Neurosurgery

Any craniotomy

Laminectomy

Trans-sphenoidal surgery

7.7 Head and Neck

All major head and neck procedures

7.8 E.N.T.

Tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy

Uvula-palatoplasty
